I keep getting asked the question.. Do you sell your digital files? I do but they are pricey. There is a reason for this. First of all I started my business in the film days and would have never sold my negatives... second of all, when I shoot portraits I invest in the best equipment, I invest time in learning new things, and I invest time in the computer work that goes into creating the absolute best print that I can provide. In saying this I want my end product to be the same. I believe printing should come from a professional lab not a grocery store or retail store that you print from a Kiosk. I feel very strongly about this. I want to give you the best products available... after-all, that's what I'm here for. ;-)

A photographer friend of mine posted this and I thought I would share it. It says everything.

Are Digital Files Included With My Photography Session?

Surely you’ve noticed an increase in the number of photographers giving away digital files. As a customer, should you expect them to be for sale? Why don’t all photographers include them in the session fee for free, or at least make them affordable? Don’t the files belong to you anyway?

Federal copyright law is very clear about image ownership. They belong to your photographer, who has the sole right to print, display, and sell them.

You should expect the price of digital files, if available, to compensate your photographer for their work and talent. Baby photographers don’t always sell a large package up front like wedding photographers. Instead, most charge a session fee that just covers some costs of providing the shoot. We rely on print sales as our sole source of income. The digital images are the key to those print sales. This is good for you. It means I have to do a good job for you, or I won’t get paid.

While many photographers do offer the files for sale, many baby photographers who specialize in creating custom art don’t. For them, it’s a matter of quality control from start to finish. They realize cutting corners on that is a disservice to their clients.

Almost all of the file inquiries I get stem from an attempt to get my work for cheap… to get my vision, but to skip out on buying prints from me. Or from a misconception that digital is cheaper to produce than film. It’s not.

The equipment is much more expensive, replacements are necessary more often, and the workflow, maintenance, troubleshooting, and constant education requirements make digital much more expensive.

Even at that, the real value of digital files comes not from the cost, but what the files contain: the work and artistry that prompted you to choose that photographer. If you purchase files, expect to pay a price that values the work, and is sustainable for the photographer. You want him or her to still be in business when your new baby starts sitting up. Or walking. Or when your family grows.

If you’re looking for cheap portraits, and you don’t care about prints or a long-term photographer, cheap photography is available in abundance on places like Craigslist. You can have a session and all the files for very little money. But for custom baby photography, the most important things to look for are artistry, image quality, experience with babies, safety, and service. Choose wisely – baby portraits are precious memories and family heirloom

My first customer in Austin

Ok so there is a story behind this one. I moved to Austin a couple months ago. I get settled and a couple days later I get an email from a former Bride that is ready to order some pictures from her wedding (6 years ago).... Anyway, in her email she leaves a phone number and I notice that it is an Austin area code.... So I email her back and ask her if she was in Austin....turns out she lives about 20 minutes from me....How AWESOME is that!! This is her precious little girl Callie. Isn't she Beautiful!

BIG NEWS

Ok everybody I have some news. My significant other was transferred to Austin TX for his job back in November. After much thought and discussion, my kids and I will make the transition sometime this year. I will be spending half my time in Austin and Half my time is MS. I will continue to do portraits and weddings in both places until the end of 2009. As of January of 2010 my focus will be Texas...
I will have the same phone number and email address so please contact me for anything. I will be back in MS once every month until June and then back in August, October and December for a week at a time. Thank you to all of my customers for supporting me and believing in me over the last 10 years. I had a blast creating memories for everyone! I will also post the dates when I will be back in town if anyone would like to schedule an appointment during that time.

I have Puppies for sale!!

Ok so I have these adorable puppies for sale. They were born on December 2nd. I only have 3 left so please let me know if anyone out there is interested. They are a rare breed from Brazil. The breed is Fila Brasileiro. They get a little large...around 140 pounds. They are very good watch dogs and very loyal to the family. They were 6 weeks old on Tuesday and already weigh between 11 and 14 lbs. Kids love them and they love kids! I have 3 girls left. One fawn and the other 2 are brindles. Call me...901.497.5897.
